Cholo's Waimea Bay - Surf and Sea Swim Series event 2 of 4
Cholo’s Waimea Swim Race July 11, 2009 680 entries

It was another record turn-out for the 16th Annual Cholo’s 2000 swim race at Waimea Bay, on O’ahu’s beautiful North Shore. This is the 2nd event of 4 in the Surf and Sea Swim Series. 680 swimmers hit the water for the 9:00 AM start under ideal conditions with partly cloudy skies, light winds, and smooth water. The 2 kilometer triangular course started inside Waimea by the famous jump-rock, then crossed to the north side near the winter surf zone. From there swimmers faced a long straightaway to the scenic Wananapaoa Islets on the southwest end of the Bay. The final leg took participants through a narrow channel between the islets and in to the beach for the finish.

Coming in first for the first time was 20 year old University of Hawaii swimmer Steve Allnut, of Forest Grove, OR. For the entire race, Allnut was literally neck and neck with second place finisher Cyrus Hashemi, 14, of Falls Church, VA, and last year’s winner Dustin Fukuda, 21, of Mililani. The victory boiled down to who had any legs left for the run up the deep sand to the finish. Allnut made it across the line in 26:08, Hashemi three seconds later at 26:11. Fukuda finished third with a time of 26:45.

For the Women it was Les Jardin Academy senior Rachel Randall, 17, of Kaneohe, also in a very tight finish. Randall clocked 28:38, just 3 seconds ahead of 2nd place finisher Elizabeth-Rose Hanohano-Hong, 21, of Kapalama. 17 year old Michelle Dudley, of Waipahu, came in 3rd with a time of 29:14.
