2008 CHOLO'S WAIMEA BAY SWIM was held Saturday, July 12 at 9:00 am. Over 640 swimmers entered the 1.2 mile swim, surpassing the first event's record attendance. The event featured two waves of swimmers, the men in the first wave began at about 9:05 am and the women took the plunge 5 minutes later. The race was blessed with calm, clear ocean conditions and dolphins swimming in the middle of the bay during the entire swim.
Dustin Fukuda won the men's division with a time of 29 minutes and 21 seconds, closely followed by Kevin Moi (29:37) and Darren Choi (29:45). Dustin, 4th place overall in the first event of the series, the Raging Isle Sprint, now leads the series followed by Kevin Moi who moved into second position midway into the series.
Shanelle Choi, won the women's division with a hard earned vicotry over past Surf'nSea series champion Nicole Hagi with a time of 31 minutes and 33 seconds. In series standings Shanelle Choi has a comfortable lead over the second in the series time leader, Kathryn Taylor.
The series now heads into the two longer swims of the series. The next race, the Surf'nSea Chun's to Waimea Bay Swim, a 1.6 mile point-to-point swim will be held Saturday, July 26 at 9:00 am.
Also of note was that there were again 23 swimmers from out of state that completed this swim. Congratulations to all finishers. See you at the next swim!
